Professor Anne-Marie Mai discusses the intersections of contemporary literature and the welfare state on the basis of examples from Nordic novels by Kirsten Thorup, Bjørk Vik, Kerstin Ekman and Kristian Bang Foss. She considers how welfare metaphors to do with the house and home are used as literary interpretations of welfare conditions. In that connection, she examines how literary studies can contribute to the Nordic welfare state research.
