Bartłomieja Nowodworskiego w Krakowie (w liceum i w czasie studiów instruktor harcerski Szarej Siódemki), studia filologii germańskiej na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim (dyplom 1988, magisterium literaturoznawcze, uprawnienia nauczycielskie), studia filologii germańskiej, historii i judaistyki na Uniwersytecie Wiedeńskim (1984-1986, stypendium Pax Christi), studia doktoranckie na Uniwersytecie w Oxfordzie (1990-1991, stypendium Sorosa), doktor nauk humanistycznych (językoznawstwo, UJ 1994), doktor habilitowany nauk humanistycznych (literaturoznawstwo, UJ 2011). 1987-1992 i 1998-99 lektor jidysz w Międzywydziałowym Zakładzie Historii i Kultury Żydów w Polsce UJ, od 1988 pracownik Instytutu Filologii Germańskiej UJ, 2000-2001 stypendium NATO (Université Paris 7), 2005-2007 stypendium Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung (Heinrich Heine Universität Düsseldorf).
